"Healing Naturally"
Alternative Treatments for Illnesses
By Dana Bennett
Long gone are the days when people are content to go to their doctors
and take the latest pill. We've researched it, we've seen the effects of
overuse of antibiotics and penicillin; and we are coming to terms with
the "old ways", the ways of our grandparents
and their parents. I am by no means a doctor, but I do feel that I am an
educated individual. Statistics show that people like me (and probably
you if you are reading this!) are more likely to look into what medical
professionals call "alternative treatments." These ranging in
scope from chiropractic to meditation
and all in between. Herbalism, holistic, acupuncture, eastern methods,
all fall into this alternative category.
I came into these methods the way most do: modern medicine had failed me. I was struck down with something unexplainable that ultimately turned out to be crohns. Crohns is a "waste-basket" diagnosis for a digestive system gone crazy. It causes everything from weight loss to arthritis, to skin conditions, all due to a mal-absorption of nutrients caused by lesions in the intestinal tract. Many theories are out there as to what causes these lesions, but the one I buy into (as well as many other "alternative" medical professionals) is the one in which posits that the prolific mis-use of antibiotics causes our immune systems to malfunction and attack the body itself, especially the digestive tract. So there I was, on a pain killer that would take a man twice my size to his bed, just to be able to walk around normally; on antibiotics that were meant to be prescribed once a day (I took those 4 times a day); steroid treatments; and exploratory surgery that yielded laser treatments to my large intestine. I had lost my job, my family was on the verge of bankruptcy, and I could barely get out of bed, much less function. The final straw fell when I had to be put on anti-depressants due to being on the heavy doses of pain killers for so long. I leaned on the countertop in my kitchen, handful of pills in hand (that themselves alone cost over $35, and insurance had run out long before) and shakily brought them to my mouth, only to send them careening all over the counter and floor. In a moment of rage, I cleared the cluttered counter in one sweep of my arm. On the counter had been papers and the phone book. The phone book fell open to "herbs and herbal treatments." I felt it to be a sign. There is where my passion with alternative treatments began. I found an herbalist that prescribed several herbal combinations, and with a little trial and error, had me off of the traditional medicines and pain killers within a month! I was sold, and have been since. |
